“You are the light of the world.”

 ~Matthew 5:14

Good morning dear sister!

You are the light of the world!  What a thought! Jesus is talking to His disciples when he says that.

That means that the same is true for us present day disciples as well.

Do you think that the word ‘disciple’ is too lofty for you? This may seem to be heavy stuff to hit you with so early in the morning, but take heart my dear sister! If you are living a life obedient to His teaching and following Him where He leads, then you are indeed a disciple learning from the Master!

Jesus proclaims you a light in this world as you allow His glory to shine through you! Some people seem to have a dark cloud hanging over their head, but the disciples of Jesus bring His light and life wherever they go!

But how can that be? It seems there is so much darkness in the world today. Jesus goes on to say that ‘a city on a hill cannot be hidden.’ Think about it, a brightly lit city that sits on a hill at night dispels all the darkness around it so that it can be seen even from a great distance. It looks lively and inviting!

God’s glory in us is lively and inviting too! It is as evident in this dark world as the city alight on the hill. If people feel a little bit more encouraged or lifted up after a moment with you, you will know that your light is shining!

And we are meant to be letting that light shine! Jesus says in His very next sentence to His disciples that no one lights a lamp and puts something over it, but lifts it up in a higher place so everyone can benefit from it.

Have you ever noticed how one person can change the atmosphere in a gathering? This is one reason why Jesus commands us to let our light shine before others. We can have a positive influence on everyone we meet if we let God’s light shine through us! The Holy Spirit gives us words of comfort, encouragement, wisdom and guidance. That, my sister, is light to someone in darkness.

Finally, Jesus instructs His disciples to let their light shine in such a way that people may see their good works, and glorify our Father who is in heaven! I know that there are plenty of times in my life when I don’t feel like letting my light shine, especially when testing, trials and troubles come my way, but if I look to my Lord, my Teacher, and follow His way, I will reflect His glory and He is glorified in my life!

That’s when we will find ourselves encouraged! That’s when we find peace! That’s the fruit that assures us that God is indeed with us, even in the struggle. And the amazing thing is that even though others may see the struggle, they will also see God!

We don’t have to be preachy to share the Gospel with others, our testimony of a living Savior dwelling within is most often seen in the way we live our lives or our reactions to life’s ups and downs. So, let your light shine, dear sister! As we practice, it will grow ever brighter until we too will be like a shining city on a hill at night; beckoning visitors to come see what must make such a wondrous sight!

Keep loving Jesus and moving forward!

With love, your sister, Celeste
