For all the nations of the world seek these things;
and your Father knows that you need them.
But seek for His kingdom, and these things shall be added to you.
~ Luke 12:30
Good morning dear sister!
I suppose that by the time you’re reading this, we will either be mourning or celebrating the outcome of the election, but, wherever you find yourself, look to the Lord because He has good news for you!
As believers, born of the Spirit children of God, we depend on our Father in heaven; the One who gave us life and keeps us in His life! Our Creator, who formed each of us in the womb by His own hand and knew us before we were born! In fact, He also knows the ups and downs of our yesterdays, today and tomorrows!
Election years are stressful; our leaders come and go, some are better, some are worse. All are fallible. This creates tension in our lives because we are the ones that reap the harvest of their sowing. It creates the illusion that our condition, our happiness, our peace depends on their leadership. But does it really?
In this passage from Luke, Jesus tells his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.”
Two of the most basic needs of humans are food and clothing. What do you think Jesus means when He says, “For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes?” What is this life that is more than food or clothing?
While I was in an unregenerate state, I ran after all that and more. From the outside, I really looked on top of things! At 21 I had my own apartment, a car, a job (to pay for the car) and I was putting myself through college. I worked hard, obeyed the laws and voted in every presidential election. I wanted to be self-sufficient, independent and unbreakable! My few friends were a lot like me, which, by the way, isn’t the best foundation for relationship building. But really, what more was there to life?
When I had time to ponder that question, the Lord would gently remind me to seek Him and His kingdom first and He would give me all that I needed for life! But I didn’t really believe that.
So, He let me run until the road ran out. Now that I think about it, I guess that makes me like the prodigal son.
When I finally came to my senses, (that whole ‘unbreakable’ idea didn’t work out), and saw my sinfulness in the light of God's holiness, I repented and allowed God to break that bondage of sin and reform me according to His will. In the light of God’s truth, I discovered so much more to life than the outward trappings of money, food or clothes.
I discovered that life in God can have peace, no matter the political situation. I discovered the deep, abiding love of my Father who promises to be with me forever, not just for a term. I’ve learned the joy of dependence on One who protects me, guides me and indeed, provides for me beyond my wildest dreams. Just as He said He would.
I love the tenderness of Jesus’ next words; “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has chosen gladly to give you the kingdom.” Wow!
Are you a part of the Lord’s little flock? If so, you need not fear for your today or tomorrows! So, no matter how you feel about how things are going, rejoice! A thankful heart is pleasing to the Lord! A sacrifice of praise is even better!
Seek God’s kingdom first, and tell me where He leads you!
With love, your sister, Celeste
