Wisdom has built her house,

She has hewn out her seven pillars

~ Proverbs 9:1

Good morning dear sister!

Our sister Wisdom has offered us an invitation to visit her today! How exciting! As we take a walk through her house, we’re welcome to ponder the architecture and furnishings of her home, we’re invited to see what is meaningful to her.

I’m the kind of person that loves to see other people’s homes. It’s not that I’m nosy, but I love to see how other homes are arranged and decorated. It gives me insight to what is important to the people that dwell there; what makes them feel happy and comfortable. As Dorothy once said, “There’s no place like home!”

When reading this verse, my first thought was ‘what are Wisdom’s seven pillars?’, followed by the afterthought of ‘what does hewn mean’? Hewn means to shape or to mold something, particularly out of wood or stone. After learning that, I am even more intrigued… what are the pillars and what are they made from? Inquiring minds want to know!

James 3:17 gives us a description of the pillars of Wisdom’s house; “but the wisdom from above is first pure, then peace-loving, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial, free of hypocrisy.’ My sister, does this help you to imagine a little about what Wisdom’s home might look like?

I imagine that wisdom, coming from heaven, pure and undefiled, as the roof being held up by those seven pillars.

The first pillar is the peace that comes from God. (John 14:27) “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give you, I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” Jesus gives us peace and there is peace in our home.

The second pillar is gentleness (Mt 11:28-29) “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Jesus invites us to come to Him. His gentle spirit rests in our home.

The third pillar is reasonableness (Romans 12:1) “Therefore I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual (reasonable) service of worship.” It is the act of offering your whole self (mind, body, spirit) to God, being willing to listen, not stiff-necked and stubborn. It is a joy to live with reasonable people!

The fourth pillar, mercy, is the ability to show compassion and forgiveness, especially to one’s enemy. (Eph 2:4-5)  “But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions - it is by grace you have been saved.” Mercy will be the first response in Wisdom’s home.

The fifth pillar, good fruits, are the results of our actions. (Mt 7:16-18) “By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.” How does our garden grow?

The sixth pillar teaches that God is impartial. (Romans 2:9-11) “There will be tribulation and distress for every soul of mankind who does evil, for the Jew first and also for the Greek, but glory and honor and peace to everyone who does what is good, to the Jew first and also the Greek. For there is no partiality with God.” God does not show favoritism, and we are not to show favor, one over another.

The seventh pillar is sincerity. (Romans 12:9) "Love must be free of hypocrisy. Detest what is evil; cling to what is good.” Our love for others must be sincere, selfless and without guile. Truth dwells under Wisdom’s roof.

Wow, this is quite a walk through Wisdom’s house! Isn’t it refreshing to just be thinking about it? But we don’t have to just think about it, God’s plan is for each of us to dwell in such a home, with Him! When we let Christ come into our hearts, He makes a home there! If we submit to her, Wisdom comes and starts molding her pillars, building us up into a walking, talking, ministering house of God!

Wisdom has prepared her food and set her table! Now she calls us to come and eat! She blesses all who come with this blessing:

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. For by me your days will be multiplied, and years of life will be added to you!”

~Proverbs 9

Let’s partake of Wisdom’s table with joy and thanksgiving! Thank you Abba, for providing not only daily bread for our bodies, but daily nourishment for our souls. May we allow you to mold us more and more into your image, for your glory!

Keep loving Jesus and moving forward, precious sister!

With love, your sister, Celeste
